While working at Olson Kundig Architects as an intern, we presented each departing intern with a handmade gift. For Cailen, our Canadian intern who was about to depart to Berlin for a year, we made a sketchbook.
The cover is made of teak, with a personalized seal on the front cover in German, with the Canadian maple leaf. On the inside of the front cover, we etched maps of Berlin. The back cover includes room to hold his favorite pencils, held in place by a thin strip of metal. The interior contains 80 pages of smooth, cream-colored paper, hand-stitched to the cover, enabling the book to sit completely flat.
I was designed and hand-stitched the interior, and was involved with the conceptual development. The covers were designed and hand-made by the other interns.
